"Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge Him
and he will make your paths straight"
The Little Sick BoyMark 9:14-29
Can you remember a time when you were very sick? Your parents were very concerned about you. They love you. They may have taken you to a doctor and got medicine for you. And they prayed that Jesus would make you well.
In this story of a sick boy, his father was very worried about his son. His son had an illness, and nothing that was done was able to help him. The doctors did not know what to do to cure him. The father did everything he could to get his son well. He tried every cure he heard about. One day he heard about a wonderful teacher who healed sick people. So he made his way through a large crowd of people and fell to his knees before Jesus.
The father pleaded: "Lord, I have brought unto you my son, my only child. Please help him. He loses control of himself and falls to the ground. Sometimes he even falls into the water and into the fire. When a spell comes upon him, he grinds his teeth, foams at the mouth, and becomes stiff. When he has an attack, it appears that he will die."
Then the father told Jesus that his disciples could not help the boy. This bothered Jesus because He wanted his disciples to walk with power too. Jesus knew that His Disciples did not have enough faith and they did not know who to pray to heal this kind of sickness.
Jesus told the man to bring his son to Him. So he did. As soon as the boy came near Jesus the boy fell to the ground with one of his attacks and rolled in the dirt.
Jesus asked the troubled father, "How long has your son been having these spells?" The father answered, "Since he was a small child. If you can do anything, have mercy on us and help us."
Because the father used the word "IF" Jesus told him "IF you believe, all things are possible to him that believes."
The boy's father cried out with tears, "Lord, I believe. Help me not to doubt."
Do you know what Jesus did?
He commanded that the illness leave that boy. The boy became stiff, and many people said "He is dead". Then Jesus took the boy by the hand and lifted him up. The sick boy was totally well.
The father was very glad that he believed in Jesus. He hugged his son and was very thankful to the Lord!
Lord, teach me to pray when my faith is not strong.
