Curious Delight
By Jamie Gandy
A pair of eyes blinked open as a flash of light flew overhead, the small kitten looked up to see the flying light move towards the grasslands. Grinning the kit leapt to her paws and shook her long sandy brown fur before bounding after the light.
Not much time passed before she reached the grasslands where she saw a large bolder surrounded by tall grass. A couple of feet away from the bolder was a small pile of rocks, on the top of the stones was a single lantern but there was nothing inside of it to show off any light. Hanging over the lantern hung a large yellow flower shining from the reflection of the moon.
The little kitten came to a stop and looked at the large flower with wonderment in her sparkling blue eyes. She stepped closer.
“ Who goes there?” Came a voice from the flower. The kitten stopped again and blinked in fear, she backed up a couple of steps before answering in her soft small voice. “ It’s only me…Curious the kitten of the grassland.” Curious meowed, locking her gaze on the big flower. ‘ Did that flower really talk to me?’ She wondered to herself.
A small firefly crawled out from behind the stem of the flower, walking onto the edge of one of the leafy stems he looked down at Curious. “ What are you doing here young one?” He asked in a gently tone.
Curious blinked up at the beetle and smiled. “ I saw a light flash past me in my sleep, I followed it here.” She replied calmly. “ What is your name beetle?” She asked, not knowing he was a firefly.
The firefly looked down at the lantern. “ My name is Majesticlight.” He said smiling, not taking his small dark eyes from the empty lantern.
“ I thought lanterns are meant to have light inside them at night.” Curious meowed, looking at the glass for a long moment she blinked her bright blue eyes then slowly she moved her gaze back to the firefly. “ Why is there no light in the lantern? It is late, shouldn’t it be lit?” She questioned curiously.
Majesticlight chuckled at the question; he flew down to the lantern and landed on the lid. Now looking at Curious again. “ The light will return to it soon.” He answered; he turned and looked up at the sky before adding, “ Have you heard the story of Jesus?” Seeing the kitten shake her head he continued. “ A long time ago there was a woman who was to bare the Son of God, this boy was to be very different then all others. When He became a man He taught many people about the love of God and the kingdom of Heaven. He died on a cross to bare our sins and forgive us all for them, on the third day of His death He rose again. He brought light into the world when only darkness surrounded it.” He paused for a moment before looking under him at the lantern. “ Much like this lantern brings light to us after the sun is gone from the sky.”
Curious’ eyes got big as she listened to the firefly’s words, purring softly she looked at the lantern and smiled. “ Why’d He do that for all of us?” She asked, her bright blue eyes shining.
Majesticlight tapped his wings together before answering, “ Because He loved us enough to be that sacrifice, and He still loves us enough to keep forgiving us of our sins.” He explained, he looked to the sky and saw a star shoot across the sky. He smiled to himself before slipping into the lantern; sitting exactly in the middle he closed his eyes.
Curious leapt to her paws and blinked in confusion. “ What are you doing?” She asked. The firefly opened his eyes as he replied. “ It is my turn to shine my light, like Jesus told us all to do.” He closed his eyes again just as his backend began shining brightly, lighting up the lantern and the surrounding area.
Curious watched in amazement, her bright blue eyes sparkling yet again. “ Wow!” She purred as the beetle’s light continued to grow with each passing second. “ Truly wonderful!” She purred.
The kitten sat there all night listening to the firefly talk about the perfect love and awesome miracles Jesus had done while living on the earth, and about the miracles God continues to do and the love He shows to everyone who seeks after His heart. Curious stayed up until the sun began to peek it’s light into the sky, and Majesticlight’s light was no longer needed until night returned again!
Through
life the
simple
pleasures
Are there
before
our
eyes
To
give
us
pause
for
dreaming
On
this

emerges
Through
what

inspire
And
so the
flame
burns
brightly
That
gives
a
special

Accounting
for
all
happiness
That's held
life's
