Why did Jesus say He was the Good Shepherd?
Love David

Dear David

Jesus told stories to people to help them understand about His love for us and about God's Love for us. The followers of Jesus understood about the job of a Shepherd, so Jesus tried to explain how great His love is for us by telling them that He was a "Good Shepherd"

In John 10:11-15 Jesus said, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep"....
"I know My sheep and My sheep know Me - just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father - I lay down My life for the sheep."

Good shepherds love and care for their sheep.
They feed them and keep them from harm.
Sheep know their shepherd.
They come when their shepherd calls.
They listen to him.
They follow him.
Sometimes a sheep may get lost.
In Luke 19:10 the Bible says that Jesus came to seek and to save what was lost.

A good shepherd finds his sheep and brings it back.

But there is more. The Good Shepherd laid down His life for the sheep. His followers are His sheep. Jesus loves us so much He was willing to die so that God could forgive our sins.

Read Psalm 23 - "The Lord is My Shepherd

(from "When God Whispers Your Name," by Max Lucado)

The shepherd knows his sheep. He calls them by name. When we see a crowd, we see exactly that, a crowd.... We see people, not persons, but people. A herd of humans. A flock of faces. That's what we see.

But not so with the Shepherd. To him every face is different. Every face is a story. Every face is a child. Every child has a name....

The shepherd knows his sheep. He knows each one by name. The Shepherd knows you. He knows your name. And he will never forget it.

"The Lord searches all the earth for people who have given themselves completely to him. He wants to make them strong...." - 2 Chronicles 16:9

"But, LORD, you are my shield, my wonderful God who gives me courage." - Psalm 3:3

"The Lord is faithful and will give you strength and will protect you from the Evil One." - 2 Thessalonians 3:3

"I love the LORD, because he listens to my prayers for help. He paid attention to me, so I will call to him for help as long as I live." - Psalm 116:1
