Can you tell me why people use a symbol of a fish to represent Christianity? Love Peter

Dear Peter

Most of Jesus' ministry took place in the region around the Sea of Galilee. Jesus was well acquainted with the fishing industry, and so were His disciples. At least seven of the disciples were fishermen from Galilee. So, it is fitting that a fish became a symbol for Christ. The Greek letters that spell fish ICHTHYS, form the initials of the phrase translated as Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.

During the early years of Christianity many were put to death for being a Christian. So when Christians would gather together in homes to fellowship, they would draw a picture of a fish in the sand outside their home to tell others who knew the secret message that this home was a place of Christian worship.
