WHO IS THE DEVIL?

  Scriptures in the bible give the devil many different names. In John 8:44 he is called the father of liars. In Ephesians 2:2 he is the prince of the power of the air. In 1 Peter 5:9 he is called the enemy, and in Revelation 20:2 he is the dragon, that old serpent, the devil, and Satan. He is called the "accuser of the brethren" in Revelation 12:10. And in Job 1:6; and Zech. 3:1 he is seeking to uphold his influence among men by bringing false charges against them as the accuser of men before God, laying to their charge the violations of the law of which they were guilty, and demanding their punishment.

In Isaiah 14: 12-17 we learn some history about the devil:
"How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground - mighty though you were against the nations of the world. For you said to yourself, "I will ascent to heaven and rule the angels. I will take the highest throne. I will preside on the Mount of Assembly far away in the north. I will climb to the highest heavens and be like the Most High." But instead, you will be brought down to the pit of hell, down to its lowest depths. Everyone there will stare at you and ask, "Can this be the one who shook the earth and the kingdoms of the world? Can this be the one who destroyed the world and made it into a shambles and demolished its greatest cities and had no mercy on his prisoners?"

We learn more history about the devil in Ezekiel 28:12-19:
"Son of dust, weep for the king of Tyre. Tell him, the Lord God says: You were the perfection of wisdom and beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; your clothing was bejeweled with every precious stone - ruby, topaz, diamond, chrysolite, onyx, jasper, sapphire, carbuncle, and emerald - all in beautiful settings of finest gold. They were given to you on the day you were created. I appointed you to be the anointed Guardian Angel. You had access to the holy mountain of God. You walked among the stones of fire.

You were perfect in all you did from the day you were created until that time when wrong was found in you. Your great wealth filled you with internal turmoil and you sinned. Therefore, I cast you out of the mountain of God like a common sinner. I destroyed you, O Guardian Angel, from the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was filled with pride because of all your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. Therefore I have cast you down to the ground and exposed you helpless before the curious gaze of kings. You defiled your holiness with list for gain; therefore I brought forth fire from your own actions and let it burn you to ashes upon the earth in the sight of all those watching you. All who know you are appalled at your fate; you are an example of horror; you are destroyed forever."

In Luke 10:18-19 Jesus tells us:
"I saw Satan falling from heaven as a flash of lightning! And I give you authority over all the power of the Enemy, and to walk among serpents and scorpions and to crush them. Nothing shall injure you! However, the important thing is not that demons obey you, but that your names are registered as citizens of heaven."

  Satan is evil (1 John 3:8),
he is deceptive, foxy and adroit (Rev 12:9; 2 Corinthians 11:3. 13-15),
and he is the great enemy who rules this world and his many helpers (Ephesians 6:12; Luke 8:30, 11:15)

But the good news is that Christ Jesus has already defeated Satan in principle (John 12:31).

In Revelation 20:10 we learn that Satan will be cast into the lake of fire at the end of time.

  The devil works to tempt and seduce the people of God (1 Thess. 3:5; 2 Cor. 2:11)
He blinds men's eyes to the truth of God (2 Cor. 4:3-4).
He destorys the Word of God (Mark 4:15)
He takes up his abode in men's hearts (John 13:27).
He accuses believers before God. (Rev. 12:10);
and he stops God's servants from doing God's will (1 Thess. 2:18; 1 Peter 5:8).

  As believers we are told to:
Resist the devil (James 4:7)
Watch and pray (Matthew 26:41);
and use the shield of faith to stop Satan's fiery darts (Ephesians 6:16).
