The Leather Tannery

Tanning is a general term used for the process of converting animal skins to finished leather. Animal hides and skins absorb tannins to keep them from decaying and to keep them pliable. Technically, the term "tanning" refers to the process by which collagen fibers in a hide react with a chemical agent (tannin, alum or other chemical), but the term leather tanning also commonly refers to the entire leathermaking process. In the bible Jesus refers to wineskins which was made of leather.

"No one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved. No man having drunk old wine immediately desires new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’"
Luke 5:37,38

New wine, as it ferments, expands. The fermenting of new wine builds up pressure in its container which can burst old skins. This also happens when you open a corked wine bottle. Old wineskins when empty are no longer supple and they crack and tear under the pressure of the expanding new wine.
