The best of the blacksmith’s art was the exquisite armor fit for princes and kings. The blacksmiths hammered out (forged) sheet plates from hunks of steel and welded the plates together into usable pieces. They also created body armor and one piece helmets out of steel. They decorated amd embossed the helmets and produced incredible art.

Noble families would have a special design made called a Coat of Arms. They would use this design to show others which family they came from. The royal family of England had a design with a lion on it. The French nobles wore a design of flowers called a fleur-de-lis. The Christian Crussaders wore a cross on their tunics. This showed that they were fighting for the Church of Jesus Christ.
